Sense-ational Science Day 3

We started with Gratitude Circle and played “That Sight and Sound Game” (similar to charades but you can make sounds and older kids weren’t allowed to use their arms). Then we discussed how our eyes work and how our eyesight differs from some animals (like deer, flies and bees to name a few).

Then we split into three groups that focused on different aspects of sight. One station focused on finding your blind spot and dominant eye, another was peripheral vision and the third was an experiment with bending light with lasers and acrylic shapes to demonstrate how our eye lens bends light for our eye to focus properly.

Next they made synesthesia art. Synesthesia is when your brain routes sensory information through multiple unrelated senses, causing you to experience more than one sense simultaneously. A common example is when letters or numbers are seen in specific colors. Another example is chromesthesia, where certain sounds trigger the experience of colors. So the explorers choose 5 sounds to illustrate as colors and shapes in a painting.

After snack, playwriting and obstacle course we played an optical illusion guessing game and split into three groups for optical illusion stations. One station focused on mirrors (with a parabola and face mixing mirror). Another station had goggles with mirrors that made everything upside down and they had to complete a simple task like stacking cups.

Then we had lunch, went to the creek and some of them played Kubb at dismissal (you have to knock down the other teams wooden blocks and the King to win).
