Sense-ational Science Day 3

Updated: Jun 26

We started with Gratitude Circle and then played “That Sight and Sound Game" (like Charades but with sounds and older kids can't use their arms to act their word out).

Today was still focused on sight and specifically optical illusions. We started with a team game of "Spot the Illusion" (rounds of optical illusions with 2 images and their team had to find both images).

Then we split into three groups that focused on different optical illusions. One station focused on mirrors (with a parabola and face mixing mirror). Another station had goggles with mirrors that made everything upside down and they had to complete a simple task like stacking cups with the googles on.  There were also two depth perception illusions: one where you try to get a pencil through a washer with one eye closed  to demonstrate how we need two eyes for good depth perception and another with two circles that look the same size but are actually different. By removing clues to the actual size and distance of an object, you can trick your brain into thinking that two similar objects of different sizes are really the same size.

Then we ate snack, practiced their play and went to obstacle course.

Next we made some optical illusion art (a 2D image of their hand with curved lines to give the illusion of a 3D hand).

Then we had lunch, finished practicing their play and went to the creek. At the creek, some played with clay while others caught whirligig beetles and minnows. Then at dismissal, most played volleyball 4 square but a couple built with tube connectors.
