Week 2 Day 4 Gravity

Gravity Day 4

We started with Gratitude Circle and a game of Eagle Eye. Then we discussed how solar and lunar tides are caused by the gravitational pull of the Sun and Moon and they made models with the Sun, Moon and Earth to show how high and low tides occur due to gravitational pull. Next we played “High tide, Low tide” (everyone starts in center circle as water droplets all together representing the ocean, eyes closed, I position a child as the Moon on one side of the field, all open eyes and if I say “High tide” run towards the moon and get past moon without getting tagged  or “Low tide” they run away from moon and safely cross the cones.) Then after snack break and playing at the obstacle course for a bit, we discussed what gravity is like on the Moon. For example, volunteers jumped as high as they could, we recorded the height of the jump and multiplied it by 6 to figure out how high they jumped if they were on the Moon. Next, they created illustrations to go with their own stories of “A Day on the Moon” (imagining what it would be like to spend a day on the Moon). Some drew playing a game of baseball or soccer on the Moon and drew how the ball would go really far or need to be weighted to play normal. Another explorer drew themselves having a picnic while watching Earth in the distance. Then we had lunch and went to the creek.
